2007
Welcome to a write-up of the 2007 WDC.
The event took place on Wednesday 26th 2007, starting at 10am through until 5pm. The event did run a little bit over schedule but these things happen and everyone enjoyed themselves.
The day started off with Dave Raggett from W3C and a talk on standards and the Ubiquitous Web which covered loads of interesting bits and pieces.
This was then followed by Andy Budd who have an interesting presentation on Are you Experienced? UX for the Web. Andy covered loads of different things and possibilities which everyone working on the web should know about and take in to practice when called upon. With plenty of interesting pictures (robbed from a number of different flickr profiles) it got plenty of people industry types and students alike thinking about how their Web systems work and are/will be produced.
Once Andy had finished Dan Dixon held a panel on Why we love the Web which had Andy, Matt, Pete and Dave. The discussion was started off with were everyone first encountered the web and the feelings it gave them. Dan also went on to ask about Job history and how everyone arrived at the conference. It came to show that not everyone who loves the web started
on the web.
We broke for lunch and huddled around some food and talked. We were met to have some discussion ‘pits’ organised by Dan but with so many people talking in so many different groups time just flew by.
After lunch I hosted a Panel on What is it like to work in the South West NM scene? I was joined by Andy from Team Rubber, Andy from True Clarity, Chris from Chris Garrett Media and Laura Francis from Sift.
All of them were there to answer questions on what it’s like working in and around Bristol. I was provided with some questions from the new first year students. Each of the panel members was able to provide a great insite in to what undergraduate students can expect after graduation.
Matt Jones then stepped up to the plate with an introduction to Dopplr an “internet service” which is a social network like Facebook and MySpace but it tracks trips your friends travel on around the world.
All this came to show students what exactly can be done is this day and age on the web and that it’s no longer about emails and HTML web pages, but an interactive services that work together.
Pete Ferne finished up with a look on his work creating Mediascapes using wireless technology and devices and how using web technologies was able to create different atmospheres using an iPAQ and wireless signals.
We shall be looking forward to more next year!
